We’re excited to share a new partnership that’s not only great for our shelter cats – but also for the environment and our local community.
The RHS has teamed up with Prairie Clean Enterprises (PCE), a Saskatchewan-based innovator, to introduce a locally produced, sustainable cat litter made from flax straw. This all-natural, no-additives litter – called Prairie Clean Litter – is derived from a renewable by-product of Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry and is set to debut at the RHS Animal Community Centre this October.
Following a successful 2024 trial in our shelter, litter proved to be a clean, effective, and environmentally friendly solution for feline care. It performed exceptionally well in controlling odour, dust, and tracking – three major concerns for any cat parent or shelter operator.
Thanks to the generosity of PCE, Prairie Clean Litter will be supplied to the RHS at no cost. This support allows us to redirect valuable resources to where they’re needed most: the direct care of animals and programs that support adoptions, humane education, and community outreach.
And the benefits don’t stop at our doors! Every adopter who takes home a cat or kitten from the RHS will receive a complimentary bag of Prairie Clean Litter, or a voucher to redeem online for a bag. Even better, for every bag of litter sold, PCE will donate $1 toward local feline health and welfare initiatives. The litter will also be available in the Adopt Shop at the Animal Community Centre.
This initiative is more than a smart shelter solution – it’s a powerful example of local innovation in action. PCE is working to reduce the estimated 1 million tonnes of flax straw burned annually on the prairies by turning it into high-quality, value-added products. Their upcoming facility in Weyburn, set to open in September 2025, will be the only flax straw multi-processing facility of its kind in the world, producing not only cat litter, but animal bedding and flax fibre products.
We’re proud to be part of this “win-win-win” partnership: a win for prairie farmers, a win for the environment, and a win for cats and their families.
