Surrendering Your Pet

We understand that sometimes there are challenges in your relationship with your pet. Thankfully, many of these can be addressed – and often solved – with the right interventions.

The Regina Humane Society may be able to help you keep your pet at home or there may be alternative re-homing options to consider.

Surrendering Your Pet to the Humane Society

City of Regina

The Regina Humane Society accepts the surrender of owned cats and dogs from the City of Regina. For residents of Regina, please contact us at (306) 543-6363 ext. 196 and make an appointment to bring your pet to the Regina Humane Society so that we can best prepare for their needs.

Please note that there may be a waiting period before we are able to accept your pet.

Outside the City of Regina

The Regina Humane Society practices managed admissions for the surrender of owned dogs and cats from outside the City of Regina to coordinate intake. The surrender of owned canines and felines from outside the City of Regina will only be accepted by appointment and when capacity allows the shelter to do so. For further information, call 306-543-6363 ext. 196.

All surrendered animals immediately become the property of the Regina Humane Society. Animals will be placed based on formal assessments by trained veterinary and behaviour professionals. In some instances, euthanasia may be warranted due to significant health or behaviour issues without prior notice to the relinquisher.

When an animal is admitted to the shelter by its owner, we request any financial support you can provide for the care of your pet. Without your support we would be unable to care for the over 3,600 animals we receive each year.

What to Bring With You When Surrendering

Our admissions staff will support you and your pet throughout the surrender by explaining the process, collecting vital information for future adopters, and respecting your right to confidentiality. During the surrender process, we will ask you for some information about you and your pet, including identification.  Personal information is never passed on to future adopters or used for any purpose other than the requirements related to animal surrender.

  • Print off the Feline Relinquish Form or the Canine Relinquish Form and fill in as much detail as you can before you arrive at the shelter. The information you give us is important in helping us to find the best options available for your pet
  • Photo identification with current address. If you do not have your current address on your photo identification then you must provide a piece of mail with your name and current address on it
  • Vaccination and medical records from your veterinarian
  • Adoption contract, bill of sale, or any other documentation verifying ownership
  • Unopened bags of pet food
  • Kennels, pet carriers, or other supplies
  • Your pet’s favourite bedding or toy
  • Please ensure your pet is restrained by a leash or carrier before exiting your vehicle.  If you do not have a restraint, please come inside the shelter first so one can be provided to bring your pet into the shelter.
